Periods may change before they stop
Periods can become more or less frequent, and bleeding may become lighter or heavier. Keep a simple record of timing and changes.
Symptoms can reach beyond hot flushes
Sleep, mood, concentration, temperature, joints and sexual comfort can change. The pattern and impact matter.
Why one hormone result may not explain it
Hormone levels can fluctuate. A clinician may rely on age, symptoms and cycle history, using tests selectively when another condition needs consideration.
Other explanations still matter
Thyroid conditions, anaemia, medicine effects, sleep problems and mental-health concerns can overlap. Assessment should consider alternatives.
Bleeding that needs prompt assessment
Bleeding after 12 months without a period needs assessment. Very heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pain or feeling acutely unwell also needs prompt local care.
Prepare for the conversation
Note cycle changes, symptoms, impact on work or sleep, contraception, medicines and relevant history. Ask about options, follow-up and appropriate referral.
